A clogged toilet is one of the most common—and most urgent—plumbing issues faced by Melbourne homeowners. While some situations do require a professional plumber, there are a few DIY methods you can try before picking up the phone. We’ll walk you through safe, effective steps for toilet unblocking in Melbourne.

What Causes Toilet Blockages?

  • Too much toilet paper
  • Flushing non-flushable items (e.g. wipes, sanitary products)
  • Build-up in older pipes
  • Low-flow toilet not pushing waste properly

Toilet Unblocking DIY  Hacks

1. The Hot Water and Dish Soap Method
Start by squirting a generous amount (around half a cup) of dish soap into the toilet bowl. Let it sit for 10 minutes to lubricate the pipes. Then carefully pour a bucket of hot water (not boiling, to avoid cracking the porcelain) from waist height into the bowl. This added pressure and heat often help break down the blockage. Wait 10–15 minutes and try flushing.

2. Use a Flange Plunger Correctly
A flange plunger (not a cup plunger) is specifically designed for toilets. Make sure the flange is pulled out and insert it into the bowl, fully covering the hole. Push down gently at first to release air, then plunge up and down vigorously 15–20 times. Keep the plunger submerged in water for best suction.

3. Try a Toilet Auger (Closet Snake)
Insert the auger into the toilet drain and crank it to break up or retrieve the clog. This tool is ideal for deeper blockages that plungers can’t reach and is safer than coat hangers or makeshift tools that may scratch your porcelain.

4. Use Baking Soda and Vinegar for Mild Clogs
Pour 1 cup of baking soda into the toilet, followed by 2 cups of vinegar. The fizzing reaction helps dissolve organic matter. Cover the bowl and let the solution sit for 30–60 minutes. Flush with hot water afterwards.

5. Wet/Dry Vacuum Method
If you have access to a wet/dry vac, you can try sucking out the clog. First, vacuum out the water in the bowl. Then create a tight seal between the hose and drain hole and turn it on. Never use a regular vacuum for this.

When to Call a Professional

If you’ve tried these methods and the toilet is still blocked—or worse, overflowing—it’s time to call a licensed plumber. Repeated DIY attempts can damage your toilet or pipes.
